Baylor Campus Living & Learning

I've had the opportunity to hold three different positions in Baylor's Campus Living & Learning (CL&L) department. This is the department that oversees residence halls and the communities housed in them.

I started as an office assistant in Allen Residence Hall (the hall I live in). Through that, I was offered a position over the summer before my junior year. By performing exceptionally well over the summer, I was offered my current position as an office assistant in the central office.

Office Assistant—CL&L Main Office

August 2019 to Present

This is my current position and it has been one of the best jobs I have ever had. Everyone in the main office is so nice and friendly. The work I am doing feels more important than anything I've done before, and I love that it's a little different every day.

I am the student worker for the office (despite being the same title as the position I held at Allen), it has nothing to do with reception work). I mostly work under the business operations manager and facilities operations manager.

So far I have worked a lot in Excel and TRAX. We manage reimbursements for everyone employed by CL&L. I love this because I (and my manager) see it as important to get students reimburse for things they spent personal money on. I also do so many other tasks that are super varied so I never get bored. Further, I have never felt so respected and valued as I have in this position. It has truly been a great experience.

Conference Assistant

Summer 2019

In this position I worked as an assistant to CL&L's facilities operation manager. Myself along with 7 teammates worked on a number of projects over the summer.

We managed the housing for various conferences held in the residence halls through the summer. These were mostly middle and high school sports teams and clubs that have camps/events on campus. We helped them with check-in and resolved any issues that arose with the building for the duration of their stay. This helped me hone my customer service skills.

We also prepared each hall for all-university move-in in the fall. We walked every room on campus to ensure it was up to standards for students to move into. We replaced mattresses, fixed faucets, and actually had a lot of fun. This really helped me develop a a team member. I developed so many long-lasting relationships over this summer, and it was one of my favorite work experiences.

Office Assistant—Allen Residnce Hall

August 2018 to May 2019

In this position I served as a receptionist for the residence hall I live in. The tasks themselves were pretty simple—I was to greet people as they entered, ensure that the lobby area was clean and in order, and I was in charge of checking out equipment to residents (vacuums, ping pong paddles, etc.).

I really loved this position because I was able to be a social butterfly. I'm naturally very friendly, and this was a perfect way to let that out. I loved chatting with people and helping them with any issues they had. Some people just had to vent, some people needed advice from a third party, and some people needed help finding on-campus resources that could help them through school and the job search. I really did my best to have a positive impact in peoples' lives, and I think I was largely successful. It was so great being able to meet and become friends with so many people.
