Ernst & Young
Summer 2021
I interned at Ernst & Young during the summer of 2021 in the financial audit IT department. In this role, I worked for two clients, performing IT controls testing for one, and application controls testing for another. At the end of the internship, I participated in a capstone project with 11 other interns.
For the first client I did IT controls testing. IT controls are automated systems used to update financial systems (like depreciation of equipment for example). During this engagement, I was mostly just learning the ropes of EY methodology for this part of an audit. The people I worked with were patient and very helpful, so I was able to learn a lot so I could improve my work.
I was on the second client for about twice as long, so I was able to see a bigger piece of the process. For this client, I did application controls testing. Application controls are in place to make sure the systems used by people are secure and being used properly. I scheduled walkthroughs with client contacts, attended and took notes on the walkthroughs, then used screenshots and other evidence to document the control.
For the last week, I was put on a team with 11 other interns across service lines and all over the US to put together a business plan for a hypothetical client issue. We put together a business plan and presentation to pitch our solution at the end of the week. Out of approximately 30 teams, we made it to the top five.
All around this was an excellent experience and I learned a ton! I learned how to better manage my time prioritize my work. I also learned a lot about working with supervisors and peers. My favorite part was definitely just having the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful people!
